Overcoming Spiritual Abuse

The church should be a place where people find help and healing. But some spiritual leaders take advantage of their trust. Instead of helping people, they hurt them. Spiritual abuse is something that could touch us all and we can’t just sweep it under the rug.

The Great Cover Up is a new web series from REBOOT Recovery designed to define, address and look at next steps for those who have experienced spiritual abuse.

“Now what I’m telling you isn’t my opinion, it’s God’s opinion.”

“Your pride is keeping you from submitting to my spiritual authority.”

“Now I don’t expect you to understand this yet, but I know God’s word says . . . ”

In the hands of an abuser, these psychologically manipulative phrases detach us from our own conscience and silence the discernment given to us by God.

Healthy spiritual leadership is marked by guiding, not “guilting” people into action. People will be shown how to follow Jesus, not be shoved into following him.
